Identification #

Conifers with rare exceptions on wood. Similar to but much less commonly encountered than Bryoria species. Lacking soredia or isidia. Red-brown in color with similarly colored apothecia. This species has can have a tangled appearance and lacks pseudocyphellae which are present in many look-alikes (CLH).

Substrate #

Conifers with rare exceptions on hardwoods and shrubs in humid, intermontane forests. Records in Alaska near the coast. Found in the southeasternmost portions of the state.

Alaskan specimens represent the northwestern range limit of the species.
